Truyền Thống An Cư Trong Đạo Phật (song ngữ)

An Cư là nét đẹp, nét truyền thống đặc thù của đạo Phật, có mặt tại Ấn Độ trên hàng nghìn năm. An Cư là một dịp tốt, thuận tiện, và thích hợp cho các hàng đệ tử của đức Thế Tôn gặp mặt với nhau, vun trồng giới đức, trau giồi đạo hạnh, xây dựng tình huynh đệ, tình pháp lữ đồng tu trong tinh thần tập thể, hòa hợp, đoàn kết, tương trợ, tương thân, tương ái, và tương kính theo đúng con đường Giới, Định, và Tuệ.

Ban đầu, An Cư là một tập tục và truyền thốngchung cho các vị tu sĩ và ẩn sĩ của các giáo pháivà các tôn giáo khác nhau ở Ấn Độ cổ đại. Sau đó, An Cư được đức Phật và các hàng đệ tử của Người khéo tiếp nhận, chọn lọc, duy trì, phát triển, áp dụng, và thực hành phù hợp với Phật pháp từ thời đó cho tới ngày hôm nay.

An Cư là một từ ghép của âm Hán Việt; nghĩa đen của An có nghĩa là yên tĩnh, là yên lặng, là dừng lại…, và nghĩa bóng của An có nghĩa là tập trung, là có mặt, là hiện diện, …; Chữ Cư có nghĩa là chỗ, là trú xứ, là nơi chốn, là Già lam, là Trung tâm tu học, là bây giờ và ở đây, v. v … Vậy, An Cư có nghĩa là các hành giả cùng nhau có mặt tại nhiều trú xứ Già lam khác nhau trong các địa phương và quốc độkhác nhau trong tinh thần tinh tấn, an lạc, hòa hợp, và đoàn kết để trao đổi, chia sẻ kinh nghiệm tu tập, và nếm được pháp học, pháp đàm, pháp hành, pháp lạc, v. v …

Nhìn về các khía cạnh khác của lịch sử Phật giáo kéo dàn gần ba nghìn năm, chúng ta có thể tìm hiểuthêm nguyên do của việc An Cư được Đức Thế Tôn và các đệ tử của Ngài chọn và thanh lọc như sau:

Sau khi đức Phật giác ngộ viên mãn dưới cây Bồ đề (Bodhi), và sau khi Phạm thiên Sahampati[1] ba lần thỉnh cầu đức Phật trụ thế ở đời để giảng dạy Phật pháp cho chúng sinh. Đức Phật đồng ý chấp nhậncác lời thỉnh cầu của Phạm thiên, và bắt đầu chuyển vận bánh xe chánh pháp tại Vườn Nai – Lộc Uyển(Sarnath). Ban đầu, Đức Phật hóa độ 5 anh em của tôn giả A Nhã Kiều Trần Như (Aññā Kondañña) làm đệ tử.[2] Sau đó, Da Sá, gia đình Da Sá, bạn bè của Da Sá, v. v… cũng được đức Phật độ làm đệ tửbằng cách đọc lên 3 nương tựa: Nương tựa Phật, nương tựa Pháp, và nương tựa Tăng.[3] Với năng lựctu tập, từ bi và trí tuệ, uy nghi, và uy tín của Ngài, đức Phật thu nhiếp và giáo hóa rất nhiều hạng người khác nhau không phân biệt giai cấp, tôn giáo, màu da, và chủng tộc.

Tuy nhiên, khi các vị đệ tử của đức Phật càng ngày càng nhiều, trong Tăng đoàn, có vài vị bất hảo, đặc biệt là nhóm sáu vị Tỳ kheo, suy nghĩ, nói năng, và hành động thiếu chánh niệm và tỉnh giác, họ đi ra đường và dẫm đạp các côn trùng trong mùa xuân, mùa hạ, và mùa đông. Lúc đó, những người Phật tửvà không phải Phật tử chê bai hành vi của họ và nói: “Các vị đệ tử của Sa Môn Cồ Đàm du hành trong khắp nhân gian, dẫm đạp các côn trùng, không có thời gian dừng lại một chỗ để tu tập.”[4] Khi nghe việc này, đức Phật dạy bảo các đệ tử của Ngài mỗi năm phải tổ chức An Cư kiết hạ theo thời tiết và khí hậu ở các vùng và quốc độ khác nhau cho thích hợp.

Thực vậy, An Cư kiết hạ là dịp tốt nhất để mỗi hành giả phát triển nội tâm, tu tập Giới, Định, và Tuệ, xây dựng Tăng thân, pháp thân, và Phật thân, làm ruộng phước tốt nhất cho các hàng Phật tử tại gia gieo trồng.

Theo truyền thống Phật giáo Bắc truyền, thời gian An cư kiết hạ thường diễn ra vào sau tuần lễ Phật Đản. Thông thường, nó gồm có 3 tháng, bắt đầu từ ngày 16 tháng 4, kéo dài tới ngày 16 tháng 7 âm lịch. Theo truyền thống Nam truyền, thời gian An Cư cũng gồm có 3 tháng, bắt đầu từ ngày 16 tháng 6 tới ngày 16 tháng 9 âm lịch.

Tuy nhiên, ở xã hội phương Tây như nước Mỹ, Pháp, Anh, Đức, v. v …, tùy theo quốc độ, trú xứ, và địa phương khác nhau, các hành giả An Cư của các Tự viện và của các truyền thống Phật giáo khác nhau có thể tổ chức thời gian An Cư cho thích hợp.

Ví dụ, khi khóa An Cư khai hạ vào sáng ngày 16 tháng 4, các hành giả An cư phải tranh thủ có mặt một ngày hoặc trước đó, để nghỉ ngơi và để nhận biết chỗ ăn, chỗ ở, chỗ ngủ nghỉ, v. v… tại nơi trú xứ mà mình tham gia An cư.

Lúc bắt đầu thời gian An Cư, khi tụ tập tại một trú xứ An Cư thích hợp, các hành giả có một cuộc họp vui vẻ để tổ chức chương trình và thời gian tu học, như giảng pháp, tụng Giới, tụng Kinh, niệm Phật, thiền hành, thiền tọa, v. v… Vào đầu giờ của ngày An Cư đầu tiên, các hành giả An Cư tiến hành một buổi Lễ đối thú – đối thú có nghĩa là người này đối mặt với người kia và đọc lên những lời tác bạch tâm nguyện tu học của mình cho mỗi người nghe, thấy, và biết cách để chỉ bảo thêm, và ngược lại, người kia cũng làm như vậy.

Tại trú xứ An Cư, các hành giả An Cư cung thỉnh Hòa thượng Thích Giáo Giới (the Most Venerable Preceptors of Precepts Teaching) làm vị luật Sư chứng minh buổi Lễ An Cư. Vị luật Sư này nương theo Đại chúng để nhắc nhở, dạy dỗ, khuyên bảo… Khi vị luật Sư chứng minh được Đại chúng chọn và thỉnh mời, ba vị hành giả An Cư lần lượt đi tới quỳ trước mặt Vị luật Sư, một trong 3 vị hành giả tác bạch và thưa rằng:

“Kính bạch Hòa thượng Giáo Giới. Chúng con pháp danh là Hòa Hợp, An Lạc, và Vững Chãi. Hôm nay tại ngôi Già Lam này, chúng con có đủ duyên lành nương theo uy đức của Hòa thượng để cùng với Đại chúng tu, học, sống chung, và sinh hoạt với nhau trong khoảng thời gian 10 ngày, 15 ngày, hay 90 ngày … Trong suốt thời gian An Cư và tu học tại đây, là những vị xuất Sĩ, chúng con được sắp xếp theo tuổi thọ giới (hạ lạp), An Cư kiết hạ (Vassa), và công đức tu tập. Y như pháp như luật, chúng con thọ nhận phòng ở, đồ ngủ nghỉ, chỗ ngồi cúng quá đường với Đại chúng. Ngưỡng mong Hòa thượng chứng minhvà cho phép chúng con bày tỏ tấm lòng thành khẩn của chúng con! ”[5]

Tiếp theo, đại diện chúng An Cư, một vị hành giả đọc lớn lên các ranh giới của Già Lam An Cư như hướng Đông tính từ ngôi nhà Tinh Tấn; hướng Nam tính từ ngôi nhà Tu Tập; hướng Tây tính từ ngôi nhà Áp Dụng, và hướng Bắc tính từ ngôi nhà Thực Hành. Khi các ranh giới được quy định xong, trong quá trình tham gia An Cư, vị hành giả nào có công tác cá nhân hoặc của Tăng chúng, đi ra khỏi ranh giới An Cư, thì phải tác bạch trước Đại chúng như sau:

“Nam Mô Bổn Sư Thích Ca Mâu Ni Phật, Kính bạch Hòa thượng và Đại chúng, Con pháp danh là Chánh Niệm, hôm nay con có công tác Phật sự, đi ra khỏi cương giới Già Lam An Cư khoảng 1 giờ, 1 buổi, 1 ngày… Khi xong công tác Phật sự, con trở về trú xứ An cư, tiếp tục nương Đại chúng để tu học. Ngưỡng mong Hòa thượng và Đại chúng hoan hỷ liễu tri!”[6]

Trong Khóa An Cư có Lễ Bố Tát (Uposatha)[7]; trong buổi Lễ này, một vị hành giả được Đại chúng chọn để tụng giới pháp, các hành giả còn lại lắng nghe và ôn lại giới Pháp mà mình đã thọ. Kết thúc khóa An Cư, có buổi Lễ Tự Tứ (P. Pavāraṇā; âm Việt – Hán là Bát Hòa La 钵和羅);[8] Trong từ phiên âm Hán-Việt, Tự có nghĩa là mình, là chính mình; Tứ có nghĩa là thỉnh cầu, là soi sáng. Vậy Tự Tứ có nghĩa là tự nguyện, tự giác, phát lồ, và tự mình thỉnh cầu hành giả An Cư soi sáng cho mình những điểm ưu và những điểm khuyết “được thấy, được nghe, và được nghi” trong tinh thần hòa hợp và đoàn kết của cá nhân và của Đại chúng.

Khi những ưu điểm của mình được khen ngợi và tán dương, thì tự mình cố gắng duy trì, nuôi dưỡng, và phát triển thêm lên. Hoặc, khi những khuyết điểm của mình được nhắc nhở và chỉ bảo, thì tự mình ghi nhận, sửa đổi, chuyển hóa, và loại bỏ dần bằng cách sám hối với tự thân và với Đại chúng.

Những gì thảo luận trên đây có thể áp dụng và thực hành vào trong đời sống thiền môn vào mỗi một tháng một hay hai lần. Khi các vị xuất sĩ áp dụng và thực hành Phật pháp thích hợp, thì các vị không những an vui, mà thầy bạn và các huynh đệ của các vị cũng đều được an vui. Tuy nhiên, trong đời sống gia đình và lứa đôi, nếu cha, mẹ, vợ, chồng, và con cái có thể áp dụng và thực hành tốt đẹp, thì tự thân của mỗi người được an vui, gia đình và dòng họ hai bên nội ngoại cũng đều được hạnh phúc.

Thực vậy, sau khi Lễ Tự tứ xong, một vị đại diện trong Chúng hành giả An Cư đọc lên các ranh giới của Già Lam An Cư đã được đề cập hôm trước của ngày đầu An Cư, và nói rằng: “Hôm nay là ngày giải chếra Hạ; giới trường tại trú xứ Già lam An Cư này được khai mở. Các hành giả An Cư có thể ra khỏi trú xứ An Cư phù hợp với cương giới mà trường hạ quy định. Nay xin kính trình lên Đại chúng hoan hỷ liễu tri. ”[9]

Khi hiểu, áp dụng, và thực hành được như vậy, thì hành giả có thể gặt hái được những hoa trái an lạcvà hạnh phúc đích thực ngay bây giờ và ở đây trong cuộc sống hiện tại. Nhờ An Cư kiết hạ, nên mỗi hành giả có thêm một giai đoạn tu tập và công đức hành trì Phật pháp bằng cách nuôi dưỡng, tô bồi, và phát triển giới hạnh, đức hạnh, và đạo hạnh. Các năng lượng tu tập, thương yêu, hiểu biết, thông cảm, tha thứ, bao dung, độ lượng, an lạc, và hạnh phúc của Tăng đoàn đều tăng trưởng. Chư Phật, Chư hộ pháp, Chư thiện thần, và quý Phật tử đều rất hoan hỷ.

Ở điểm này, chúng ta tìm hiểu thêm về từ Tăng đoàn; tiếng Pāli của Tăng đoàn là Sangha; Sangha có nghĩa là hòa hợp và đoàn kết, chánh niệm và tỉnh giác, vững chãi và thảnh thơi. Sangha có nghĩa là một Đoàn thể tu tập gồm 4 người trở lên. Sangha bao gồm 2 Chúng lớn: Chúng xuất sĩ và chúng cư sĩ; Chúng xuất sĩ gồm có quý sư thầy và quý sư cô; Chúng cư sĩ gồm có cư sĩ nam và cư sĩ nữ.

Theo lời Phật dạy, trong mùa An Cư kiết hạ, khi Chúng xuất sĩ tu tập, học pháp, và hành pháp, thì Chúng cư sĩ cũng tu tập, học pháp, và hành pháp, đặc biệt là hộ trì chánh pháp. Nương vào chiếc y vàng giải thoát và hình bóng an lạc của Tăng đoàn, ngoài việc học đạo, hiểu đạo, và hành đạo, Chúng cư sĩ còn phát tâm hộ trì chánh pháp bằng cách cúng dường bốn thứ: 1. Đồ mặt, 2. Đồ ngủ nghỉ như mền, gối, túi ngủ… 3. Thuốc men, và 4. Đồ ăn thức uống.

Sau khi khóa An Cư kiết hạ gần mãn, để tái tạo và nhìn thấy lại truyền thống và hình ảnh khất thực của đức Phật và Tăng đoàn, Chúng xuất sĩ, tức các hành giả An Cư đi khất thực quanh trú xứ để Chúng cư sĩ có dịp nuôi dưỡng và phát triển tâm thành bố thí và cúng dường tịnh tài và tịnh vật cho trú xứ và hành giả an Cư.

Khi hiểu và thực hành được như vậy, thì cả Chúng xuất sĩ và cư sĩ đều cùng nhau đi trên con đường an vui, giác ngộ, và giải thoát, và cùng nhau đem lại an lạc và hạnh phúc đích thực cho tự thân và cho tha nhân ngay tại thế gian này.

Như vậy, khi kết thúc khóa An Cư kiết hạ hằng năm, Chúng xuất sĩ trải nghiệm thêm một giai đoạn đạohạnh, đức hạnh, và tuệ hạnh. Trong khi đó, Chúng cư sĩ cũng đạt thêm công đức, ân đức, và tuệ đức. Cả hai Chúng này đều nương tựa và hỗ trợ với nhau như hình với bóng, như nước với sóng, và cùng nhau góp phần đưa đạo Phật đi về tương lai xán lạn huy hoàng trên khắp thế gian này.

Trong khi nỗ lực trình bày bài viết này một cách sơ lượt và tóm tắt, người viết không sao tránh khỏinhững thiếu sót, ngưỡng mong Chư tôn đức từ bi hoan hỷ chỉ giáo.

Cuối cùng, chúng con xin nguyện cầu hồng ân Tam Bảo, gia hộ cho quý vị xuất Sĩ và cư Sĩ, chư vị hộ pháp và hoằng pháp, cùng quý Phật tử gần xa, vô lượng an lạc, vô lượng kiết tường.

The Tranquil Dwelling Tradition in Buddhism

The Tranquil Dwelling, which is a beautiful feature, a specifically traditional feature of Buddhism, has been present in India for more than thousands of years. The Tranquil Dwelling is a good, favorable, and appropriate opportunity for the World-Honored One’s disciples to meet together, to cultivate virtuous precepts, to improve pious behavior, to build brother/sisterhood, the sentiment of Dharma friends cultivating together in the spirit of collectivity, harmony, solidarity, interdependence, mutual affection, mutual love, and mutual respect, according to the right path of Virtue, Concentration, and Wisdom.

At first, the Tranquil Dwelling was a general custom and tradition for monastics and hermits of the various sects and religions in ancient India. Later, the Tranquil Dwelling was skillfully received, adopted, maintained, upheld, developed, applied, and practiced by the Buddha and His disciples in accordance with the Buddhadharma from that time to now.

An Cư (Tranquil Dwelling) is a compound word of Sino-Vietnamese; the literal sense of An means tranquility, quietness, stop, etc., and the figurative sense of the An means to gather together, to attend, to be present, etc.; The word Cư means place, dwelling, abode, Temple, Center of cultivation and learning, here and now, etc. Thus, An Cư means that practitioners gather together at many various Temples in different localities and countries in the spirits of diligence, peacefulness, harmony, and solidarity in order to exchange, to share the experience of cultivation, and to enjoy Dharma learning, Dharma talk, Dharma practice, Dharma joy, etc.

Looking at the various aspects of Buddhist history stretching back nearly three thousand years, we can learn more about the reason that Tranquil Dwelling was adopted and purified by the World-Honored One and His disciples:

After the Buddha had attained perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and after He had been entreated three times by Brahma Sahampati[10] to remain in the world in order to teach the Buddha Dharma to human beings. The Buddha agreed to accept Brahma’s requests, and started the first turning of the Dharma Wheel in the Deer Park at Sarnath. Initially, the Buddha taught the five brothers of the Honored Elder Aññā Kondañña to make His disciples.[11] After that, Dasa, whose family, friends, etc. were also taught by the Buddha, became His disciples by reading out three Refuges: Taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Sangha.[12] With the energies of His cultivation, loving-kindness, compassion and wisdom, majesty and prestige, the Buddha accepted and taught many different kinds of people irrespective of caste, religion, color, and race.

However, when the disciples of the Buddha became more and more numerous, within the Sangha there were several un-virtuous followers, especially a group of six monks, who, thinking, talking, and acting lack of mindfulness and awareness, went out on a road and stepped on insects in spring, summer, and winter. At that time, Buddhists and non Buddhists disparaged their beharior and said: “Sramana Gautama’s disciples, who travel everywhere, step on insects, and do not have time to stop for a place to cultivate.”[13] When hearing this thing, the Lord Buddha taught His disciples to hold the Tranquil Dwelling of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa) every year according to the weather and climate in various regions and countries for suitability.

Indeed, the Tranquil Dwelling of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa) is the best opportunity for every practitioner to develop his or her inner mind, to practice Virtue, Concentration, and Wisdom, to build up the Sangha body, the Dharma body, and the Buddha body, to make the best merit field for lay Buddhists sow and plant.

According to the tradition of Mahayana Buddhism, time of the Tranquil Dwelling of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa) usually occurs after Vesak Week. Normally, it consists of three months, starting from April 16, and lasting to July 16 of the lunar calender. According to the tradition of Theravada Buddhism, the Tranquil Dwelling time also consists of three months, starting from June 16, and ending to September 16 of the lunar calendar.

However, in Western societies such as the United States of America, France, England, Germany, etc., according to different countires, residences, and localities, the Tranquil Dwelling practitioners of Temples and of various Buddhist traditions are able to organize the Tranquil Dwelling time for suitability.

For example, when the Tranquil Dwelling Course opens the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa) on April 16, the tranquil Dwelling practitioners must arrange to be present a day or so before, to rest and to recognize where to eat, where to stay, where to sleep, etc. in the residence where they attend the tranquil Dwelling.

At the beginning of the Tranquil Dwelling period, when gathering in a suitable residence of the Tranquil Dwelling, practitioners have a joyous meeting to organize programs and times of cultivation and learning, such as Dharma teaching, precepts chanting, Sutras chanting, recitation of the Buddha’s names, walking meditation, sitting meditation, etc. At an early hour of the first Tranquil Dwelling day, the Tranquil Dwelling practitioners conduct a Ceremony, face to face with each other – face to face means that this person faces that person and reads the sincere inviting words of his or her cultivation and learning for every person to hear, to see, and to know how to instruct more, and vice versa, that person also practices it like this.

In the Tranquil Dwelling residence, practitioners invite the Most Venerable Preceptor of Precepts Teaching (Hòa thượng Thích Giáo Giới) to act as a Dharma Attorney demonstrating the Tranquil Dwelling Ceremony. This Attorney relies on the Great Assembly to remind, to teach, and to advise, etc. When he has been chosen and invited by the Great Assembly, three Tranquil Dwelling practitioners go to kneel down in front of him, one of three declares and says:

“Dear the Most Venerable Preceptor of Precepts teaching. Our Dharma names are Harmony, Peacefulness, and Steadiness. Today at this Temple, we have enough good opportunity to take refuge in the majesty and virtue of the Most Venerable in order to join together with the Great Assembly to cultivate, to learn, and to live together in a period of 10 days, 15 days, or 90 days, etc. During the whole time of the Tranquil Dwelling, cultivation, and learning here, as Monastics, we are arranged according to the age of the precepts receiving, the Tranquil Dwelling of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa), and the merit of cultivation. Relying on the Dharma law, we receive accommodation, pillow, banket, sleeping bag, our seat position to have a mindful and traditional lunch with the Great Assembly. We respectfully expect the Most Venerable to joyfully approve and allow us to express our sincere hearts!”[14]

Next, representing the Tranquil Dwelling Assembly, a practitioner read out the boundaries of the Tranquil Dwelling Temple such as the East counted as a house of Diligence; the South counted as that of Cultivation; the West counted as that of Application; and the North counted as that of Practice. When the boundaries are completely specified, in the process of attending the Tranquil Dwelling, a practitioner has his or her individual mission, or mission of the Sangha, goes out of the Tranquil Dwelling boundaries, he or she must say these inviting words in front of the Great Assembly:

“Namo Original Master Sakyamuni Buddha, Dear the Most Venerable and Great Assembly, my Dharma name is Mindfulness, today I have a Buddhist activity, and must go out of the boundaries of the Tranquil Dwelling Temple about an hour, half a day, or a day, etc. When completing the Buddhist activity, I turn back to the Tranquil Dwelling residence, continue to take refuge in the Great Assembly to cultivate and to learn. Therefore, I respectfully expect the Most Venerable and the Great Assembly to happily approve my sincere speech!”[15]

In the Tranquil Dwelling Course there is a Ceremony of Uposatha.[16] In this Ceremony, a practitioner is chosen by the Great Assembly to read the Dharma precepts, the remaining practitioners listen and review the Dharma precepts they have received. At the end of the Tranquil Dwelling Course, there is a Ceremony of Tự Tứ (Pāli Pavāraṇā;[17] Chinese 钵和羅); in Chinese-Vietnamese transliteration word, Tự means I, myself, one, oneself; Tứ means invitation, illumination, or enlightenment. Thus, Tự Tứmeans voluntariness, self-awareness, confession, and one invites the Tranquil Dwelling practitioner to illuminate one’s strengths and weaknesses “seen, heard, and suspected” in the spirits of harmony and solidarity of the individual and the Great Assembly.

When one’s strengths are eulogized and praised, one tries to maintain, nurture, and develop them. Or, when one’s weaknesses are reminded and instructed, one accepts, corrects, transforms, and eliminates them step by step by doing penance by oneself and with the Great Assembly.

What is discussed above can be applied and practiced into the life of the Temple in every month once or twice. When monastics apply and practice the Buddha’s Dharma properly, they are not only happy, but their Master, Dharma brothers, and sisters are also happy. However, in the lives of family and couples, if parents, spouses, and children can apply and practice it well, each person becomes happy, his or her family and relatives also get happy.

Indeed, after finishing the Ceremony of Tự Tứ (Pavāraṇā), a representative of the Tranquil Dwelling practitioners Assembly reads up the boundaries of the Tranquil Dwelling Temple previously mentioned on the Tranquil Dwelling first day, and says: “Today is the day of completion of the Tranquil Dwelling Course of the Retreat; the boundaries of residence of this Tranquil Dwelling Temple are opened and removed. The Tranquil Dwelling practitioners may now go out of the Tranquil Dwelling residence in accordance with the boundaries whose school of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa) prescribed. Now, I would like to respectfully, clearly, and happily submit this to the Great Assembly.”[18]

When understanding, applying, and practicing like this, the practitioners can reap flowers and fruits of authentic peacefulness and happiness right here and right now in the present life. Thanks to the Tranquil Dwelling of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa), every practitioner has had one more stage to cultivate and merit to practice the Buddha Dharma by nurturing, beautifying, and developing the precepts of conduct, virtue of conduct, and piousness of conduct. The energies of cultivation, love, understanding, sympathy, forgiveness, tolerance, generosity, large-heartedness, peacefulness, and happiness of the Sangha have grown. The Buddhas, the Dharma guards, the good gods, and the Buddhists are very happy.

At this point, we learn more about the word Sangha; Sangha in Pāli means harmony and solidarity, mindfulness and awareness, steadiness and relaxation. Sangha means that a Congregation of cultivation consists 4 people or more. Sangha includes two big Assemblies: the Assembly of monastics and that of lay people; the Assembly of monastics consist Buddhist monks and nuns; that of lay people consist of lay men and lay women.

According to the Buddha’s teachings, in the Tranquil Dwelling season of the Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa), when the Assembly of monastics cultivate, learn the Dharma, and practice the Dharma, the Assembly of lay people also cultivate, learn the Dharma, and practice the Dharma, especially protect the Dharma. Taking refuge in a liberatingly brown robe and the peaceful image of the Sangha, in addition to learning Buddhism, understanding it, and practice the Dharma, the Assembly of lay people still develop their sincere hearts to protect Buddhism by offering the four things: 1. Robes or clothes, 2. Sleeping and resting things such as blankets, pillows, sleeping begs, etc. 3. Medications , and 4. Food and drink.

After the Tranquil Dwelling Course of the summer or rains Retreat (Vassa) nearly finishes, to recreate and to look again at the tradition and the images of the Buddha’s and the Sangha’s begging for alms, the Assembly of monastics, that is, the Tranquil Dwelling practitioners go for alms around the residence for the Assembly of lay people to have a good opportunity to nurture and to develop their devout hearts of giving alms and offering pure possessions and pure belongings for the residence and for the Tranquil Dwelling practitioners.

When understanding and practicing those teachings like this, both the Assemblies of monastics and lay people travel together on the path of peacefulness, enlightenment, and freedom, and together bring authentic joyfulness and happiness to themselves and to others right in this world.

Thus, when completing the Tranquil Dwelling Course of the annual Summer or Rains Retreat (Vassa), the Assembly of monastics have experienced one more stage of pious conduct, virtuous conduct, and wise conduct. Meanwhile, the Assembly of lay people also has acquired more merit, gratitude of virtue, and wisdom of virtue. Both of these Assemblies depend on and support one another like the image and its shadow, like water and its wave, and contribute together to bringing Buddhism into the future brightly and gloriously all over the world.

In attempting to present this writing concisely and briefly, the writer cannot avoid shortcomings, and respectfully expects the venerably honored Ones to be compassionate and joyously teaches him!

Finally, we would like to pray that the thankful blessings of the Triple Gem support and uphold you, monastics and lay people, Dharma protectors and Dharma preachers, along with all Buddhists, near and far in infinite peacefulness and infinite auspiciousness.
